Business Concepts You Should Use to Get Your Food Truck Off the Ground

Food trucks are rightfully heavily focused on the food aspect, but it’s important not to lose sight of the fact that it’s a business and you need to focus on your strategy to make sure it gets off the ground. Rather than leaving it to chance, there are a few things you can focus on that will set you on the right path.

SWOT Analysis

SWOT stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, and is a method of business strategy that helps you identify where you can stand out from your competitors and where you might be more vulnerable. You can use this to figure out what you need to work on and where you can lean into what you’re good at. However, for a SWOT analysis to be effective, you need to be really honest with yourself. It can be helpful to work with someone who you trust and isn’t involved in the day-to-day operations in order to honestly identify what you struggle with. SWOT analysis is most effective when you have a specific objective or issue you’re trying to deal with, but it can also be useful for providing proof of concept for your whole business idea.

FIFO

FIFO stands for first in, first out, and is a method of inventory management that is very useful for kitchen inventory management. To practice FIFO, whatever is oldest in your inventory is used first. This is especially important for the food industry, to make sure that nothing goes bad or is wasted. In order to make sure that you’re practicing FIFO properly, it’s helpful to label food containers with the date they were opened. They should also be stored at the front of your ingredients so you grab them first. Just make sure you take FIFO into account when doing your accounting as well. If you don’t use FIFO in your accounting, you won’t have an accurate view of the costs and profits from your food truck.

Loyalty Rewards

Building loyalty with your customers and getting them to come back multiple times is one of the best things you can do to make sure you are successful. There are a variety of loyalty program structures that you can use, so make sure you choose one that appeals to you and fits the food you’re selling. The most important thing is to make sure that the points or stamps or whatever you choose are valuable to the customers. If they don’t want what you’re offering, it won’t actually help. You may need to test a couple of different options in a focus group to come up with the right iteration.

These business concepts can help you get your food truck running smoothly on the business side, leaving you more time to focus on your love for the food. Just make sure you keep enough time set aside to regularly evaluate your progress and refine your strategy.
