What’s the Secret to Finding a New Favorite Food?

Looking for a new favorite dish is not always the easiest of tasks. After all, people tend to be creatures of habit, especially when it comes to their food. If you’re an aspiring foodie or you just want to branch out a little bit more, it can feel a little daunting at the beginning, but the most important thing is to start. There are a few tips and tricks that can make this a little bit easier along the way.

Break out of your ‘norm’

When you are looking to expand your palate, you need to actually move beyond what you normally do. Think about what you do when you go to one of your favorite restaurants. How long do you actually spend looking at the menu? Do you ever look beyond your favorite dishes, or do you know your order by heart, even before you’re seated? Start by branching out to something that you haven’t tried before. After all, you already know the restaurant is a good one, so you can feel safe in trying something outside your norm. The more things you try, the more you’ll get a sense of what you do and don’t like.

Recommendations Rock

You should also be asking people for recommendations. Waiters, other foodies, friends, and family are all great sources to help you try something new. This can be especially helpful if you aren’t sure where to start. Waiters are a particularly good source of information, as they can highlight the best parts of the menu that you may not normally look at. You can also turn to the people in your life to get a recommendation for new places to visit for food. And of course, the internet is a great source of food recommendations. Just make sure you take reviews with a grain of salt, especially if they aren’t consistent.

Keep an open mind

Just remember that this is a process and not everything is always going to go smoothly. Here’s the thing about trying new foods and looking for a new favorite: You’re going to try things you don’t like. And that’s okay. How else are you supposed to expand your culinary horizons? These experiences are meant to help you find what you do and don’t like, so don’t be afraid to try something that you aren’t familiar with. Keep an open mind about the foods that you’re trying, and unless you already know that you don’t like something or you have an allergy, be willing to put yourself out there and try something new.
